Modelling Competition - SIAM-IMA Student Chapter 2023

The Edinburgh SIAM–IMA Student Chapter is hosting a two-month-long student modelling competition starting on the 13th March for students at the University of Edinburgh (UoE) and Heriot-Watt University (HWU). Our aim is to call students to put their academic knowledge and experience into practice and tackle problems under real-life industrial applications. Specifically, groups of students will investigate problems and data contributed by industrial partners and try to solve them. Then, a jury would evaluate the quality and impact of the work. The groups of students with the best contributions would be asked to present their work to a panel. Prizes would be given to all the presenting groups. Below, more details are given about the structure of the competition and the responsibilities of the different parts.

Joining the Modelling Competition

To join the competition, simply fill in this form and select the project you would like to work on. If you already have a team, please also provide their names (only one person in the group needs to do this). If you do not have a team, the committee can put you in contact with other people interested in the same project, if you wish. Once you have registered, you can start working on the problem right away!

Submissions consist of an industrial and academic report. The latter should be a ten-pages document where you state how you approached the problem, the methodologies, and procedures you used, your numerical experiments, and the problem’s limitations. All reports must also contain a one-page document summarizing your contribution for the industrial partner. The submission deadline for both these reports is two months after release date, that is, 15th May 2023.

Afterwards, the groups with the best contributions will be asked to present their work in person in front of members of the evaluation committee and a representative of each industrial partnership. The winners of the competition will be announced on the same day that the presentations will be taking place.

Registration form

Edinburgh Airport is interested in analysing the number of eGates required to keep queueing at the border within 15 minutes while simultaneously minimising the number of additional eGates installed. This project involves developing a simulation model to test different demand scenarios and process enhancements (i.e. increased eGate availability). Sensitivity analysis is also needed to understand the robustness of the recommended solution. The strongest recommendation will be used to inform the strategic direction of Edinburgh Airport’s investment in e-Gate technology.

FAQ

We aim to close the registrations 2 weeks before the end date of the competition.

Yes, there is no limit on how many projects a team can work and compete. If this is the case, just choose the first preferred project in the registration form.

Yes. Please note that if new members are about to be considered, we would require the consent of all the current members of the team. Let us know by email to siam-ima@maths.ed.ac.uk adding new members in your team.

Of course! We aim to give prizes to all the presenting groups in the form of cash or vouchers. We will publish more information about this soon!
